Residents of Piai and the surrounding areas of Mwea-east in Kirinyaga County awoke to discover a three-storey building had collapsed.
According to Piai residents, led by Michael Chomba, the owner of the collapsed building had halted construction for two months. Chomba stated, "We were shocked to find a three-storey building that had stalled for two months on the ground, and what we want to know is whether there was somebody inside the collapsed building like a watchman, as the main gate was locked and the compound is surrounded by iron sheet."
Ken Mugo, the chairman of boda boda at Piai, mentioned that he passed by on Monday on his way to Murinduko, and the building was still standing tall, only to find it collapsed later. "I still cannot believe the building has collapsed; at first, I thought it was an earthquake," Mugo said.
Residents living near the collapsed building reported that it came down shortly after 1 am. Mary Muthoni said, "It was raining when I heard a bang and thought it was a thunderstorm, only to find a collapsed building this morning."
